The United States Department of Commerce today announced international visitation to the United States rose 15 percent, and visitor spending improved by 20 percent in the first quarter of the year 2009 over last year due to the widely known recession resulting to lowered rates and affordability of visiting. The global economic recession arrived on the US tourism scene in September 2008 like an abrupt cold weather front, even airlines offered budget fares along with hotels providing the lowest room rates ever. In March 2009, visitation to the United States climbed substantially to 4.7 million, an increase of 19 percent over March 2009.
